Take Action! Five Ways to Get Involved in Public Policy

Here are some tips to achieve:

  • A seat at the table

  • Appointments to policy boards and commissions

  • Press opportunities

  • Opportunity to bid on government contracts

  • Paid corporate board appointments

  1. Get educated - Understanding the issues that impact your bottom line will help you grow your business. Whether it's lowering taxes, access to health care, or access to capital - decide which issues are important to you and stay informed by reading the news daily and subscribing to newsletters from supporting organizations.

  2. Be heard - Write your elected officials about the issues that are important to you - be sure to include personal experiences. Remember, they want your vote. Also, don't underestimate the importance of writing a letter to the editor of your local paper.

  3. Vote - With women making up 52% of eligible voting Americans, it is crucial to have your voice heard by marking your ballot. Register to vote and vote for the candidates who support your issues.

  4. Be a part of the action, year round - During the election cycle find a candidate who supports the issues that are important to you. Volunteer for his or her campaign and make it known why you are involved. It is equally important to be involved with either candidates or organizations when we are in a "non-election season."

  5. Money speaks - Donate to candidates and organizations that support your issues and make sure they know which issues you are supporting them for.
