Although very new, the organization impressed me from the start with its focus and direction. It has 3 goals, namely, to use the clout, name recognition and resources of the largest Kansas City women-owned businesses to effect changes in 3 critically important areas:
- Increased business opportunities for women-owned businesses in both the private and governmental sector;
- Fairness and standardization of WBE certification processes at the local, state and federal levels; and
- Increased presence of women business owners on the influential Kansas City corporate boards.
Under the joint leadership of Nancy Zurbuchen, our executive director, and Becky Wilson, co-founder and P.R. expert, this organization has garnered a mind-boggling set of accomplishments in its short existence including, but not limited to, the following:
- Legislative recognition by the State of Missouri permitting independent review and certification of women-owned businesses by the National Women’s Business Owner Council (NWBOC);
- Independent recognition by the City of Kansas City, Missouri permitting independent review and certification by NWBOC (pending);
- Currently working with the State of Kansas, Department of Transportation regarding NWBOC certification (pending);
- Currently working with the State of Kansas regarding creation of an MBE/WBE Program (did you know that Kansas currently does not have one?);
- Meetings to interface with Kansas City’s largest procurement officer groups introducing them to women business owners;
- Regularly scheduled networking meetings for the same purpose;
- Detailed work on local and national level regarding training and grass-roots initiatives to break the glass ceiling in influential corporate boards; and
- Work at the local, state and national levels on a variety of legislative issues critically important to women-owned businesses.
